TIDES Institute 2016Georgetown University, June 28-July 1, 2016
I attended the third and last Teaching to Increase Diversity and Equity in STEM (TIDES) Institute at Georgetown University, along with Sarah Moore, of Engineering, and Joe O'Rourke, also in CS. Dr. Kelly Mack, the program director, was here again to lead the long and intense meeting. All the teams, including the honorable mentions, presented the progress they made on their very different projects in front of a panel of three judges in "tribunals." While I have serious misgiving about the format and name of this activity where the judges and the teams vote thumbs-up or thumbs-down on the presentations, it was fun to find ourselves back with our sister team of Bryn Mawr (Liz McCormack, Doug Blank, and Mark Matlin), and our indefatigable, energetic, and caring coach, Sumi Pendakur of Harvey Mudd.
By far, the gem of this meeting was the closing keynote speech given by Dr. Kamao Bobb, of Georgia Tech, currently at NSF, where he is Program Officer in the Directorate for Computer & Information Science & Engineering. Without notes, Dr Bobb spoke about inequality, inequity, about growing up, in a profoundly touching manner, great simplicity and honnesty, and with a charisma I haven't observed in many years. He is the kind of person you will make you stop what you are doing and decide to join him in his effort to bring diversity and equity to the forefront of higher education. Definitely somebody one should have the experience of listening to, live.
