TEDx BerkshiresKripalu Center, Stockbridge, MA, June 13, 2016
This was my first time attending a TEDx event. The Kripalu Center is only an hour away from Northampton, and I wanted to attend and say hello to Giovanna Fessenden, who was giving one of the talks. Giovanna graduated from Smith in 1999 with a Comp. Sci. major, and is now a patent attorney, dealing with technology. Her talk was on the blockchain technology, which is used in the bitcoin network, and is becoming very attractive to many different companies interested in preventing hacking and maintaining large databases where users can expect privacy, and safely carry out transactions. I was the second reader on a very interesting Honors Thesis this year, the work of Angela Upreti, who was working with Prof. Judy Cardell, on how the bitcoin technology could be adapted by utility companies for the efficient monitoring the use and distribution of energy to customers.
